Taking Charge @ your library
In reading the books Teen Spaces: The Step-by-Step Library Makeover by Kimberly Bolan Taney and Learning Environments for Young Children: Rethinking Library Spaces and Services by Sandra Feinberg, Joan F. Kuchner, and Sari Feldman, I found a central message that I want to foster in my library. Both books emphasized the idea of using children's own artwork and other ways of helping children feel a sense of belonging in the library setting.
I would like to start a morning club with sixth-graders (who could take this sense of belonging in a library with them to middle school). We could use the acrylic frames like we saw at Papillion and routinely change the artwork and signage in the library. We could publish a newsletter incorporating puzzles, word searches, upcoming events, interviews, etc. We could choose monthly topics and find books to fill a display area.
My hope is that these club students will pull their family, friends, and teachers into the library to see their contributions.
I am still playing with the name, but wanted to get input on the idea.
